Sock donation helps shelter guests, MCAS students in need

MICHIGAN CITY — Nest Community Shelter has received a donation of 5,000 high-performance socks from Bombas, which have been distributed to shelter guests and Michigan City students in need.

“We are incredibly grateful to Bombas for their thoughtful donation,” said Harrison Holtkamp, executive director of the Nest Community Shelter.

“Access to high-quality socks is something many of us take for granted, but it can make a world of difference for someone experiencing homelessness or poverty. These socks will help our guests stay comfortable, healthy and focused on getting back on their feet,” he added.

Nest Community Shelter Receives Bombas Socks Donation, Pays it Forward to Support Local Michigan City Children In Need

Nest Community Shelter, a non-profit organization providing emergency housing and support services, has received a generous donation of 5,000 high-performance socks from Bombas known for their signature performance socks made from moisture-wicking and antimicrobial materials. The donated socks are being used to provide dignity and comfort to the shelter’s guests, with the excess supply of 3,750 pairs of socks being shared with the Michigan City Area Schools to support children and families in need throughout the local community.

Bombas provides premium socks while donating to homeless communities and matches every sock purchased with donations to shelters across the country. This is the second year this donation has been given to Nest Community Shelter. Last year, they received 3,000 pairs of socks, and Nest donated what they did not use to La Porte County agencies that could use this donation.

La Porte County homeless count is about much more than gathering data

MICHIGAN CITY — State officials say the annual Point in Time Count of the homeless provides valuable data to gauge progress in helping them and determine what still needs to be done, but one local participant said data is the least important part of the effort.

On Wednesday night, volunteers in Michigan City and La Porte bundled up for the PIT Count. Conducted nationwide every January, it sends volunteers, trained social workers and advocates for the homeless out to the streets to conduct the count.

Indiana Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, in a statement Wednesday, said, “It is essential to have an accurate Point-in-Time Count so that Indiana policymakers understand what needs to be done and what progress is being made.

Nest Community Shelter helps homeless and everyone else weather storm in Michigan City

MICHIGAN CITY — With its location on the north side of Michigan City, which received a whopping 35 inches of snow during a two-day period last week, the Nest Community shelter was put to the test this past weekend, and passed with flying colors.

Nest remained open during the storm, something many area supporting organizations were unable to do as a result of the severity of the storm. As snow piled up and temperatures plummeted, the shelter not only remained open, but expanded services as a warming site.

That it was able to do so showed the incredible power of community solidarity in the face of a challenging and potentially deadly situation, according to Director Harrison Holtkamp.

Plenty of experience joining the Nest Shelter Board for 2024

MICHIGAN CITY — Nest Community Shelter has announced its Board of Directors has three new members, who bring bring a wealth of experience and expertise in the nonprofit and community service sectors.

Joining the Board are Jackie Dermody, Kathleen Kelly and Kristy Hahn, further enhancing the board’s capabilities in its mission to provide support and assistance to unhoused individuals in the community, according to Nest Executive Director Harrison Holtkamp.

“Their dedication to philanthropy and their notable accomplishments in nonprofit industry make them valuable assets to our organization,” he said.
